BILATERAL TRADE RELATIONS
The bilateral trade dataset contains annual bilateral data covering 150 economies and their partners, broken down by Multilateral Trade Negotiations (MTN) categories.
This comprehensive dataset consists of four core information elements:
1. Overview of total bilateral imports for the last available 10 years.
2. List of bilateral trade agreements, which are formal agreements between two economies that facilitate trade and economic cooperation.
3. Share of bilateral trade by MTN categories for the last available year.
4. Trade indicators by product category: Simple average MFN, trade-weighted average of MFN, and the trade-weighted average of best preference applied to two selected economies in three categories: all products, agricultural sector and non-agricultural sector, for the last available year.
5. Preferential regimes between the two economies (if applicable).
How to find the statistics:
· To access the statistics, simply select two "Economies" (i.e. Economy A and Economy B), and click "Apply".
The data is provided annually, from 1996 onwards. If an economy has not reported data for the last 10 years, it is noted as "not available".
Glossary
Multilateral Trade Negotiations (MTN): The product classification system the WTO uses for trade statistics and policy analysis. The MTN categories, defined according to the Harmonized System, consist of a two-level structure with 22 MTN categories and 72 sub-categories. To explore the MTN further, please click here.
Harmonized system (HS): An international nomenclature developed by the World Customs Organization. It is arranged in six-digit codes, allowing all participating economies to classify traded goods on a common basis. Beyond the six-digit level, economies are free to introduce national distinctions for tariffs and many other purposes.
Imports by MTN: These are import values in millions of US dollars, a data point reported by selected economies by MTN product categories.
Agricultural/Non-agricultural products: All products covered in Annex 1 of the WTO Agreement on Agriculture are considered non-agricultural products. HS codes not in Annex 1 are subject to non-agricultural market access negotiations.
Simple average: This is the average of most-favoured-nation (MFN) applied tariffs, calculated based on the pre-aggregated HS six-digit averages, for trade between two economies.
Trade weighted average (MFN/the Best preference): This is the average of tariffs at the six-digit Harmonized System (HS) level, weighted by the bilateral import flows of the most recent year. It represents the most-favoured-nation (MFN) applied tariffs and the most favourable trade preferences available, using pre-aggregated averages of HS six-digit data.
