TIME SERIES

The time series offers a comprehensive view, with detailed information by economy across years and over product groups. It covers tariff data (MFN applied and preference) and imports from 1996, along with final bound duties. For a complete understanding of data coverage by year, please go to "Data availability".

This section consists of three core information elements:

1.     Overview of trade-weighted average of applied tariffs (MFN and best preference) and imports for the last available five years.
2.     Simple average, trade-weighted and maximum duties across years by economy and product based on MTN product groups.
3.     Final bound duties by economy and product based on MTN product group information since 1996.

To find the statistics:

·          Please select "Economy," i.e. "Importer".
·          Please click the + sign to refine the "Product" selection based on a more detailed degree of sub-category. The +/– sign toggles between displaying the next level of disaggregation or compressing the display to the next higher level of aggregation.
·          Explore data by clicking "Apply filter".

The data herein is provided on an annual basis, from 1996 onwards.

Glossary

Product classification: Product identification systems for classifying goods.

Harmonized system (HS): An international nomenclature developed by the World Customs Organization. It is arranged in six-digit codes, allowing all participating economies to classify traded goods on a common basis. Beyond the six-digit level, economies are free to introduce national distinctions for tariffs and many other purposes.

Multilateral Trade Negotiations (MTN): The product classification system used by the WTO for trade statistics and policy analysis. The MTN categories are defined according to the Harmonized System and consist of a two-level structure as follows:

  • 22 MTN categories
  • 72 MTN sub-categories

Trade-weighted average: The average tariffs at the six-digit Harmonized System (HS) level, weighted by the total import flows by year. This indicator is calculated using combined averages of HS six-digit data.

Binding coverage: the percentage of tariff lines that a country binds in the course of accession to the WTO or during WTO tariff negotiations.

Simple average: The unweighted average of the ad valorem or ad valorem equivalents (AVEs) of MFN applied, MFN final bound, or preference tariffs based on pre-aggregated HS six-digit averages.

Share of duty-free: The proportion of duty-free HS six-digit subheadings in the total number of subheadings in the product group. Partially duty-free subheadings are considered on a pro-rata basis.

Maximum duty: The highest tariff line level ad valorem duty or ad valorem equivalent (AVE).

Bound duties: In this section, the indicator refers to final bound tariffs, which means WTO commitments may not increase a duty rate beyond an agreed-upon level. Once a duty rate is bound, it may not be raised without compensating the affected parties.
